Service Victoria UX/UI & Digital
Cyber safety check
Situation
The Service Victoria "Cyber Safety Check" landing page aims to empower Victorians by increasing their awareness of online threats and providing them with actionable steps to improve their cyber safety.
The page seeks to address the growing need for individuals to protect themselves in an increasingly digital world.
The primary challenge is to present complex information about cyber safety in an accessible and engaging way. The page needs to motivate users to take the assessment, understand their risk level, and implement the recommended actions.
It also needs to provide links to further resources without overwhelming the user. Building trust and conveying authority are crucial, given the sensitive nature of the topic.
This page plays a vital role in Service Victoria's mission to provide accessible and helpful services to the public. By offering a straightforward and actionable cyber safety check, the page empowers individuals to take control of their online security.
Tasks
-
The primary goal of this research was to ensure the landing page content was relevant, accurate, and addressed the most pertinent cyber safety concerns for the Victorian public, thereby establishing credibility and providing valuable context for the cyber safety check.
-
The aim of this iterative wire framing process was to optimise the user flow and information hierarchy, ensuring that key messages were immediately visible and that users were intuitively guided towards the "Get Started" button, maximising engagement with the cyber safety check.
-
The objective of this careful copywriting was to make the information accessible and persuasive to a broad audience, regardless of their technical expertise, thereby increasing understanding and motivation to take the cyber safety check.
-
The purpose of this thorough testing phase was to guarantee a seamless and inclusive user experience for all visitors, regardless of their device or any disabilities, thereby maximising reach and ensuring that everyone could access and benefit from the cyber safety information and check.
Actions
-
We made the "Get Started" button prominent and used action-oriented language, placing it strategically above the fold and potentially repeating it further down the page.
-
We implemented a clean and uncluttered visual design, utilising clear headings, short paragraphs, and ample white space, consistent with the broader Service Victoria style guidelines.
-
We ensured the landing page was fully responsive and performed well on mobile devices, recognising that many Victorians access online services from different devices.
-
We included clear and concise information about what the cyber safety check entails and what users could expect to receive as a result (a personalised action plan).

Results
A significant positive outcome is the growing awareness among users about potential online threats. The landing page and the check itself prompt users to think about their online habits and vulnerabilities they might not have previously considered. This increased consciousness is the first crucial step towards safer online behaviour.
The check touches upon fundamental aspects of cyber safety, such as password strength, scam identification, and the importance of verifying online identities. This contributes to a broader understanding of essential online safety practices within the Victorian community, equipping individuals with the knowledge to navigate the digital world more securely.
By providing clear links to reputable external resources like password strength checkers and scam identification guides, the Cyber Safety Check acts as a gateway to more in-depth information and tools. This helps users who are motivated to learn more and take further action to protect themselves online, directing them to reliable sources of support and education.
